Sitting in Starbucks, enjoying a nice latte (addicted to them!), doing some planning, listening to funky music, watching people walk in and out getting their morning dose of our drug of choice.  So what is it about Starbucks that is so compelling that we MUST come here?

The environment is not great.  Seats hurt my butt, it’s always freezing (maybe should put my clothes back on), wi-fi isn’t free, the music tends to be louder than it needs to be, and it’s not always clean.

Expectations.  I think this is why people love Starbucks.  You know what you are going to get when you come in.  The coffee will be like you like it.  The staff will be friendly.  The environment will be like it always is.  You know what you are going to get BEFORE you get here.  You feel like you are  part of the Starbucks family.  I love Dunkin Donuts coffee (and chocolate glazed donuts!), but you just don’t feel that there.

Probably a lesson for churches – do people know what they are going to get when they get to your church and if so, will they come back because of or in spite of that?
